Thank you, Nicole. Now I know when to use woe betide and woe begone in the right ways! I would like to give you two expressions that are great and need to be dusted off and used more often. Uff dah–A Swedish expression for those times when you are suffering from “sensory overload”. My Swedish mother uses this one a lot. Another great expression that I was reminded of last night when watching “Bleak House” is Hoity Toity. I think it means pompous .

hey julie—woebegone is DEFINITELY an awesome word, and i am happy to hear that you’re using it. it doesnt mean the same thing as “woe betide,” so i’m sure you are not getting them confused. “Woe betide” is like a warning of extreme misery. or just a statement saying there is extreme misery. I use it as a warning (tongue-in-cheekly). woebegone is an adjective: her woebegone face. i think it means more like sad or miserable in appearance.

What does “woe betide” mean? I like the sound and I also would love to use it in sentences. I often use “woe begone”. It could be that I am using “woe begone” when I should be using “woe betide”. Please advise

Ok. Where shall I start? I do LOVE this post. :-D
1. Teddy – yes, absolutely love, love, love him. BUT, I am still not happy with Jo turning him down and him marrying Amy. I mean, Amy!! So full of herself…aiyah…I’m happy and ok with the Professor. Didn’t really find him creepy (wouldn’t be on my list), but he was not T.O. for Jo. :-(

2. Darcy would definitely be near the top of my list. Couldn’t quite place Mr. Knightley at first. So I don’t have as much input on him – haven’t read/watched Emma in a while. He always seemed a bit too old for her…

3. Clark Kent – is this a particular one or the book one? I’ve never read Superman, but oh how I loved Dean Cain!!!

4. Don’t know who Walter Sherman is or The Finder. But I do like “lying liarface.”

5. Gilbert Blythe – absolutely!!
