it said healthy and it said chocolate.
so i said SURE.

this weekend my brother got married (woot) in atlanta—which means that, in addition to all the loveliness that was the wedding, there was a wealth of food. amazing food. some of the best food i’ve ever eaten (barefoot contessa’s mac n cheese, i’m talking to you). (and also you, milton’s bleu cheese mac n cheese). (and, yes, you too, vortex’s nachos). (and lynne’s mashed potatoes. and martha’s carrot cake. and…ok you get the idea). the fact is, we had so much food that i don’t know if i fully ate a single meal—and by that i mean, ate everything served at a single meal.
but the past few weeks i have been trying to eat more healthily (read: less jack in the box. more of the things they sell that you have to cook yourself), and i defended my eating this weekend by telling myself i would eat only vegetables and fruits for a few days to compensate. because, you know, that’s how your body works.
so far, in my Quest To Only Eat Fruit and Vegetables, I have eaten:
i win, right?
wood ranch has THE best mac&cheese. ever. (that’s right, kraft, that’s what you get for discontinuing organic-mac-n-cheese-shells. fail.)
(note: omgosh hilarious — i already have a tag called mac-n-cheese. must go back and read those.)
all i wanted all day yesterday was a cupcake. a smooshy bit of cake goodness with a dollop of icing on top. and maybe sprinkles. or glitter. or whatever. a cupcake!
so we made plans, my friend and i. cupcakes it would be, we decided. we had dinner with my family, and then looked up the top cupcake places around here.
which all close at — no lie — 7 pm.
what kind of store closes at 7 pm? i mean really? no self-respecting coffee shop would dare to pull such a stunt. no restaurant. not even grocery stores close at 7pm! the MALL is open past 7 pm.
apparently, though, cupcakeries are above such convenient hours. all three of the ones in orange county close at 7.
that was pretty depressing, i have to admit. when you’ve spent the latter half of your work day propelled by the promise of deliciousness, and then find that deliciousness whisked away from you… horrible. absolutely wretched.
we tried to see if there were any other cupcakeries that looked good — nothing came up.
AND THEN we saw the cupcake truck. morsel. and it was open till 9! we checked its website for the schedule and drove down to irvine.
ahh cupcake bliss. it wasn’t a susiecake or a sprinkles, but it was DELICIOUS — and frankly, it was open so it got our business. mmmm. vanilla raspberry cupcake. and from a truck–which, everyone knows, makes it so much more fun! perfect.

this week i made brownies from scratch. scratch means they don’t come from just one box. nope, you open a LOT of boxes and bags and combine it all! who knew?! and, as an added bonus, when you make brownies from scratch, they come out star-shaped! (exhibit A on right)
okay, in all seriousness, this was so much fun. i want to make star shaped everything.
on a related note – does anyone know if cream cheese comes in chips? i’m going to write the folks at philly and suggest it if not. cos i would have loved to put cream cheese in the brownies. heart. er, star.
