this is my life right now — I’m sorry for the lack of words… more soon!

the game plan

it seems that, at last, i have the beginnings of a plan. actually it’s a complete plan, in a way, just not an incredibly long-term one :)

as you may have noticed, i’ve been out here in cambridge, mass for nearly two years. the first several months were simply lovely. i was super happy, felt like i had a niche, could handle my meaningless job, and was having a generally good time. round about the time 2009 started, though, things began to go downhill. i call it (in my head) (and now on here) the trifecta of trials: my job angst skyrocketed, winter came and stayed and stayed and stayed, and socially things were getting a little tough. i think maybe if i had been happier on any single front (work, home, weather), the other two wouldn’t have been so bad. in some ways, things have picked up for the better — its spring, i’m hanging out with more people, having loads of fun again — but the threat of winter is ever-present, i still hate my job, and i think the damage is done. time to move.

i love moving. i mean, really, if i could live my life the way i wanted to, i would move every few years. over and over. there’s something about moving that’s just so invigorating — it forces you to evaluate all of your priorities (everything from what possessions to keep and what things to let go of, to where you want to go and why and what to do there). i think it’s lovely, and for as long as i can support this totally unstable lifestyle, i intend to.

but where to go? i’ve been wrestling with that for a while. and, to be honest, i’m still not set. but i have the beginnings of a plan – and here ’tis:

  • may 1 - i begin packing my apartment up, shipping things to my parents in california.
  • june 30 (or thereabouts) – i quit my esteemed job at H– (someone else takes over my illustrious career of photocopying for a living)
  • july 5 – all of my earthly possessions, save one large suitcase and 2 suitable carry-ons, are en route to california.
  • july 6 -  i board a plane to london, england. i spend 6 weeks there, working on an editing project for a small christian publishing company (more on that later).
  • the rest of july and part of august - i take weekend excursions throughout england and europe.  i also watch the world cup.
  • august 14 – the project ends. i say goodbye to all my new friends and the country manor house we’ve been staying at.
  • august 16 – i board a plane to athens, greece. i spend 2 weeks in greece with my brother. we have an absolute blast.
  • august 18 – i turn 30. on a beach in greece. there might be better ways to go, but i’m thinking this is up there on the list.
  • august 31 (or thereabouts — the beauty of getting tickets with miles) – i board a plane back to boston.
  • september 1 (or thereabouts) – i board a plane to california.
  • september (and possibly october – depending on how my finances hold up) – i am in california, blissfully unemployed, regrouping a bit, figuring out who i am and what i’m doing, writing, dreaming, sunbathing, eating avocados, watching TV, and you know, doing whatever i want.
  • after october - who knows? tabula rasa…

Operation: 2010 Best Year Ever — still going strong.

this just in

have i told you this already?

this just in from the dean’s office (not a direct quote per se):

H–  is not going to have lay-offs! and don’t believe the rumors about a hiring freeze — it’s a bit of a hiring frost, if you will, but it’s not a freeze!!

a hiring frost– a little worse than a hiring cold front, but not as bad as a hiring freeze.

oh, the comfort we find in the economic-crisis times!

yay, school!

starting on january 27, i will (kinda) be back in school! woot! okay, so not working towards a degree or anything like that. i don’t even know if i’m actually considered a student. but i will be taking a literature class at the extension school, and that’s good enough for me.

i’m taking “cross-cultural studies in the novel” — and from the reading list it looks like it’ll be pretty awesome — we’ll be reading novels from across two centuries and five countries. i am ridiculously excited. you should expect a lot of posts about things we talk about in class or themes i pick up on as i read. also a fair amount of whining about writing formal essays as this class happens to be writing-intensive. brace yourselves. muhahaha.

we’ll start with Theodore Dreiser’s An American Tragedy and move to Stendhal’s The Red and the Black, Great Expectations, Jude the Obscure, Wharton’s The Custom of the Country, The Great Gatsby (woot!), Larsen’s Passing, Mukherjee’s Jasmine, and The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.

i feel like cameron in 10 things i hate about you: “and i’m back in the game!”

backhanded and roundabout

somehow a discussion about who was taller and shorter in our family (pursuant to dre day’s comment on my recent post) got tangled up with some good-natured banter about which of us was cuter. and i have now been (magnanimously, of course) informed by the first of my brothers that i am “tall as a button.”

did i mention that sometimes being the firstborn has a certain price attached? yes. well, we take what we can from the ankle-biters.
