reforming education paradigms (hear! hear!)

sir ken robinson’s latest (+ some nifty illustrations). let me just say this: most of what he says here makes good sense to me — but i particularly want to highlight that when he mentions the over-diagnosis of ADD/ADHD, he isn’t saying the disorder doesnt exist — just that it probably isnt as “epidemical” as some regions seem to think. i have quite a few friends who, once diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, got a lot of help and would argue vehemently that such a disorder is real and can be treated. i agree. robinson’s an expert in education and learning processes, but not medicine — which he readily admits. i hope no one takes offense.

eureka!

“we are often served better by connecting ideas than we are by protecting them.”

i recently heard about a new book, Where Good Ideas Come From, by Steven Johnson, and when i posted the quote from it (above) on facebook, a friend of mine replied with the link to the “trailer” for the book.

impressive, insightful, and wicked fun to watch (not to mention ponder!). this looks like a real winner, and i can’t wait to get my hands on the book itself!

dance dance

kathy, annie, anne, brenda and i took a road trip to bath, and although google maps assured us the trip would take around 2 1/2 hours, it actually lasted just over 4… perhaps it goes without saying, but brenda, anne and i got a little bored… and i just happened to have my flip cam with us…

time travel

this weekend, i got to do some time traveling — that’s right! — a trip back to 1627 to see the pilgrims at plimoth and the native americans nearby. thankfully, i brought along my trusty flipcam and camera, and i’ve (kinda) documented the trip!

to see our adorable native guide, the people of plimoth, and me trying to walk on stilts (among other things), click play (or click here for youtube link; it might be better quality on youtube directly):

quite hilarious

think abbott & costello… in the middle of hamlet‘s gravedigger scene… and yup, it’s a grand slam!

the beginning of the skit is awesome, the middle gets a little slow, but hang on through the end — it’s well-worth the wait. love love love.

a shout-out to my dad for sending me the link.
